Coronavirus disease COVID 19: Symptoms, Effects and its Cure

covid 19

Coronavirus disease is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Which was first identified  an outbreak of respiratory disease cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It was initially reported to the WH(world health organization ) on December 31, 2019. Then WHO(world health organization) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency. Viruses, and the diseases they cause, may often have different names.  For example, Corona is a virus that causes COVID 19 . People often know the name of a disease, but not the name of the virus that causes it like also HIV is the virus that causes AIDS . The name of the coronavirus disease is announced by the WHO(world health organization) . The WHO announced the name of the new disease is “COVID 19” on February 11th, 2020.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as

  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)
  • Severe  Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The COVID-19 and influenza viruses have a similar disease position. They both cause respiratory disease, which presents a  wide range of illnesses from not serious through to severe disease and death. The range of symptoms for the two viruses is similar, the fraction with severe disease appears to be different. For COVID-19, data to date suggest that 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic, 15% are severe infection, requiring oxygen and 5% are critical infections, requiring ventilation. These fractions of severe and critical infection would be higher than what is observed for influenza infection. Those most at risk for severe influenza infection are children, pregnant women, elderly, those with underlying chronic medical conditions, and those who are immunosuppressed. For COVID-19, our current understanding is that older age and underlying conditions increase the risk for severe infection. Although for most people COVID-19 causes only mild illness, it can make some people very ill. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.COVID-19 appears higher than for influenza, especially seasonal influenza.

Both viruses are transmitted by contact between people , droplets through sneezing and coughing and fomites. As a result, the same public health measures, such as social distancing, hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue, use of surgical masks), are important actions all can take to prevent infection and stay safe. We have to do nothing that much but must have to do preventions against COVID 19

COVID-19 affects different people in different ways.The symptoms of the corona virus in kids, adults and old people are different. Old people may get infected and directly need ventilation but most of the young infected people will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization or through just simple medication because of their strong immune system. The symptoms of coronavirus is as common cold symptoms. The following are the symptoms of COVID 19;

Most common symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Tiredness

Less common symptoms:

  • Aches and pains
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhoea
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Rash on skin, or de-colouration of fingers or toes

Serious symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Loss of speech or movement.

In some cases  , symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia or breathing difficulties. Some people are more likely to become ill with pneumonia-like adults 65 years or older and children younger than 5 years old and the people who have ongoing medical conditions (like asthma, diabetes or heart disease) and the people who smoke cigarettes are most caused by pneumonia. Mostly young people are invincible. As they are strong and have a strong immune system

People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should manage their symptoms at home by taking steam and medicines. On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.

China’s doctors have concluded that the best way to treat this (COVID 19)  at earlier stages is to take steam two times a day at least can recover the patient. As we all know the disease is an outbreak from china but the first country that have been recovered from COVID 19 is also China. While other countries like Italy ,United States of America, Spain is on the high rank of positive cases of coronavirus . USA have million of positive cases of corona virus and at the top of the rank.

COVID-19 outbreak was the first time experienced in Wuhan City of China at the end of December 2019. Which spread rapidly in China and then worldwide in 209 countries of America, Europe, Australia and Asia including Pakistan. Actually this was not the first outbreak of the coronavirus. The previous coronavirus outbreaks include the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) outbreak and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreak [8]. The WHO(world health organization) declares that the COVID-19 thought the third outbreak of the coronavirus which affected more than 209 countries. The number of positive coronavirus cases encountered in the USA (United States of America) followed by the ITALY and Spain. Every developing country taking serious actions against this pandemic situation and country Pakistan also taken different rigorous measures like designed special hospitals, Laboratories for testing, quarantine facilities, awareness campaign and lockdown to control the spread of virus.

The Government of Pakistan has established a COVID-19 Relief Fund to receive a donation for the welfare of public. The arrangements to fight against the COVID-19, there are lots of measures being taken by the government of Pakistan to control the outbreak and facilitate their people. There were many hospitals been working in this scenario to bring back life and fight against the deadly outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.

In the capital territory Islamabad, there was a single hospital functional. While in the Baluchistan, there were 10 hospitals for COVID-19. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 7, Punjab 6, Sindh  4, Gilgit-Baltistan 4, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir 3 hospitals were functional. Specific hospitals are approved for the treatment of COVID 19 affected people. Each hospital-based upon the isolation wards and are expected to conduct need and availability assessments of supplies like equipment, personal protective equipment for doctors and laboratory diagnostics. Quarantine facilities are also available in Pakistan’s hospitals. The Quarantines being used to restrict the activities or separation of persons (in a non-health care facility) who were not ill yet, but who might have been exposed to an infectious agent or disease such as COVID 19 with the objective of monitoring symptoms and early detection of cases. And also Pakistan’s testing capacity has been increased from 30,000 to 280,000 and would be further enhanced to 900,000. The current scenario of Pakistan is not satisfactory as Pakistan is a much-populated country were required more facilitation. Pakistan is a developing country where the financial position is not better as compared to China, USA, UK, Russia to combat with COVID-19 outbreak. The number of hospitals and quarantine facilities being not fulfilled as required. If these medical facilities improved, then it will not be difficult to control the transmission of viruses and the treatment of patients. Currently, the testing facilities are much lower than the required target. And also the people of our country shows a little bit nonserious attitude toward this disease.

People of the world are conscious that it is a common cold and have so many simple symptoms so can it be treatable with antibiotics. But the is absolute No, antibiotics do not work against viruses. COVID 19 is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of this virus . In China and more than 20 vaccines in development for COVID-19, there are currently no licensed vaccines or therapeutics for COVID-19.  In contrast, antivirals and vaccines available for influenza. While the influenza vaccine is not effective against the COVID-19 virus, it is highly recommended to get vaccinated each year to prevent influenza infection. But from the  Coronavirus, we can prevent by doing nothing or you can say just by cleaning ourselves, making social distancing, wearing masks , using hand sanitizer etc. and follow the directions of the local health authority.

Corona-virus Drug: Remdesivir

Remdesivir drugs will be available soon for the coronavirus cure. Many pharma companies are developing remdesivir drug on mass production for quick availability all around the world.
